Storm-Ready Pools: Protecting Your Backyard Investment in Hurricane Season

Introduction

Living in South Florida means enjoying sunshine most of the year, but it also means preparing for hurricane season. Pools are one of the largest backyard investments homeowners make, and without proper precautions, storms can cause costly damage. At Project Concepts, we’ve helped countless homeowners safeguard their pools before and after severe weather. Here’s how to keep your pool storm-ready and protected year after year.

1. Don’t Drain Your Pool Completely

A common mistake is emptying the pool before a hurricane. Doing so can cause your pool to “pop” out of the ground due to hydrostatic pressure. Instead, lower the water level slightly (no more than 1–2 feet) to prevent overflow.

If your pool has a premium finish like PebbleTec®, avoid lowering the water too much. PebbleTec finishes must remain underwater to prevent cracking or surface damage. Instead, lower only about 6–12 inches and focus on securing equipment and balancing water chemistry

2. Turn Off Power to Pool Equipment

Before the storm arrives, shut off the breaker for pumps, heaters, and automation systems. Cover exposed equipment with waterproof materials, or move portable items indoors.

3. Secure Loose Objects

Deck chairs, pool toys, umbrellas, and even grills can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Bring them inside or tie them down securely away from the pool area.

4. Balance Your Water Chemistry

Shock your pool and balance the pH ahead of the storm. This helps protect against contamination from debris, rainwater, and possible flooding.

  • Chlorine Pools:
    • Shock with chlorine before the storm to help combat contamination from debris, rain, and runoff.
    • Aim for a slightly higher chlorine level (around 3–5 ppm).
  • Saltwater Pools:
    • Even though the pool generates its own chlorine, it’s still smart to add extra liquid chlorine or “super-chlorinate” via the control panel before the storm.
  1. Post-Storm Cleanup Tips
  • Remove large debris with a net before restarting your pump.
  • Test and rebalance water chemistry immediately.
  • Inspect equipment for damage before turning power back on.
